The Phone

The promos looked intriguing. Imagine you're walking along a street and a phone rings. Do you answer it? It could be the Clue Master calling to give you the chance to win $25,000.

Teamed up with another random person who also answered another fateful ringing phone, you solve clue after clue as you dash around the city, in an attempt to get to the case of cash before the time runs out.

How would you like to be that random passer by? It'd be majorly cool right?

Except it couldn't be you, and not just because you don't live in the right city.

Why not? Because the contestants are cast.

Which blows the whole premise out of the window straight away. Sure, they edited it to make it look like the phone was ringing with countless people walking past ignoring it, until one lucky person decided to answer it. Unfortunately, it became very clear, very quickly that the gorgeous girl and the hunky guy who answered each phone were preselected by the producers. Unsurprised, and with unquestioning obedience, the two immediately set off on their quest.

The girl, told to go and get into a van, does so. If you're a gorgeous young woman and you've suddenly received a phone call from a strange man telling you to go and get into a van would you do it? Of course not. She did so because she already knew she was on a game show and had been prepped by the producers.

The show is also edited to make it look like the contestants have no contact with any crew from the moment the phone rings until the money is found. Amazingly, their voices come through oh so crystal clear when they aren't speaking on the phone. Yup, they're wearing microphones too. How convenient.

Let me just say here that if you think about it, casting the show in this way makes a lot of sense for the producers. Getting two completely random people on the show is fraught with danger and unknowns. If they cast the contestants, they know they're getting two people who look good on camera, they can match up the contestants to form the sort of team we want to watch, and they can make sure they're not getting any psychos. They also have the added benefit of getting the contestants to pre-sign whatever forms they need to to appear on TV, and can prep them with microphones and at least some degree of knowledge that they're going to be busy for the afternoon.

OK, so let's get past this obviously contrived scenario that saw these two enter the game. Let's look at the game elements. Here, we must give at least some kudos to the writers. They did have some clever and diverse puzzles and challenges throughout the episode:

  • solve a clue to work out the PIN to a card that you can use to pay for petrol in your almost empty van;
  • using a bunch of keys with remote locks, find the one car in the huge car lot that one of those keys will open;
  • find a woman walking around the streets whose point of view one of the contestants can see via a camera in the woman's glasses, and must relay by phone to the other contestant who is trying to find her.

  • It seems, however, that the two contestants they chose were, shall we say, not the sharpest tools in the shed. They failed to complete either of the first two challenges I just mentioned within the allotted time the Clue Master had given them, and so had money deducted from the $25,000 prize.

In the find-the-car challenge, The Giggling One was screaming at the TV telling the dopey pair to use the damn car remotes to see which car beeped/blinked its lights instead of walking up to each car to try the lock.

Here, the show did actually achieve something that all good reality shows do: make you shout at the TV to tell the contestants how stupid they are and how patently obvious the solution was, and how you would have done that challenge so much better.

On the subject of doing things better (lame segue I know), the host, Justin Mullet Melvey, just didn't cut the mustard as the mysterious Clue Master. He was too wooden and pompous, and lacked that degree of authority necessary to pull off the role. Casting an unknown with the right degree of "stage presence", and who doesn't flirt with the female contestant, would have been a better option.

But now, to the pièce de résistance; the element of the show that managed to tip it from a somewhat contrived game show to an utterly ridiculous load of bollocks: the fictional story-line.

The Fox 8 website gushes about the show's "enthralling fictional element". Enthralling? Er, no. Not by a long shot.

Let's set the scene. The Clue Master is riding in a limo talking on the phone to the contestants to give them their next clue. Sitting beside him in the limo are two Japanese men (who reappear throughout the episode), one of whom is busy typing on a laptop. Initially it just appears as some silly window dressing for the Clue Master, to make him seem more important than he actually is.

Oh, if only that's all it was. We found out later that the Clue Master was actually "doing business" with these men, and the deal had gone south. As he didn't want to get his hands dirty, it was up to the contestants to put on the supplied gloves, secretly enter a house while the occupant was having a three minute shower, and steal the keys to a sports car parked outside. Meanwhile, the Clue Master was grassing on the Japanese businessmen to the cops, who later "arrested" them.

What the? It's a game show. You have a cool premise of getting two people to run around Sydney following clues Amazing Race style, and you have to add this naff pretend story line? I haven't seen anything with a less immersive story since Scavengers. Marrying game show and fictional plot just doesn't work unless you're in improv.

    *sigh*

Alright, that pretty much brings me to the end of my rant.

Except to ponder what happened to the 3 hour countdown. It was nowhere to be seen at the end of the episode. Were they close to the 3 hour limit, or was that just another staged gimmick as well? Sort of like the only-one-person-can-win-but-we'll-let-you-share-the-cash-anyway lame excuse for a twist. They could at least make them divvy up the cash 60/40 or something.

The Giggling One and I were both hyped by the promos, and significantly let down by the execution. No second chances for The Phone I'm afraid. This won't be getting a look in on our TV screen again.

    Olympify Me

It was a fantastic 16 days of competition, spoiled only by Channel 7 and Southern Cross interrupting the broadcast on weekends to show the AFL. That and Rebecca Wilson on Yum Cha (an excellent daily olympic themed show despite Wilson).

I write this as the Closing Ceremony beams into my lounge and that of countless viewers around the world (ooh, more drummers). I've had my backside firmly planted on the couch for two weeks (and am more than a little eager to get some exercise tomorrow!).

Our coverage here was, of course, biased towards Australian athletes with little else being shown, though SBS to their credit did show some of the less popular sports from an Australian perspective.

It was weird in a way that because we did well in Sydney and Athens, there was an expectation that the Aussies would do just as well, if not better, in Beijing. And we didn't. But, China's astonishing medal haul, along with that of the USA, aside, we did very well. As did Great Britain who are showing ominous signs for London in 2012 (and, it has been pointed out, won a lot of their medals sitting on their bottoms).

I did enjoy some sports more than others. Swimming and athletics were obvious highlights, especially Mr Phelps and Mr Bolt.

At the other end, gymnastics, diving, boxing, equestrian, BMX, and anything synchronised, head my list of events that continually puzzle me by their presence in the Olympic Games.

But no ranting now as it's time to sit back and bathe in the 16 days that were, and look forward to the next Commonwealth Games in Delhi and the London Olympics. There is a high probability I'll be doing just the same and taking leave for couch sitting then as well.

    Well done China! Magnificent!

Edit: OMG the Mayor of London is a scruff. Button up your suit man!

And another OMG! A London Bus that comes apart to reveal an aged rocker and an Idol winner. Puhlease. Following on from the fantastic Chinese pageantry it is just awful. Oh, wait, David Beckham. Well that makes it all better. Good grief. Let's hope they learn how to do this properly by the time 2012 comes around.

    Olympic Thoughts

Some Olympians seem to pride themselves on fashion. Take Stephanie Rice for example. She swum wearing green and gold earrings during her races. And female gymnasts are all fashionable and sparkly.

Some athletes and sports, however, have no concept of fashion. In particular I'm pointing the finger of unfashion right at the Handball goalkeepers. They wear trackie daks for goodness sake. Daggiest. Uniforms. Ever. Which leads me to ponder why the Aussies are so bad at the sport.

On another "what the?" note, I've added a few choice Olympic quotes over at my other blog Whimsy Askew. Enjoy.

2008 Olympics - Opening Ceremony Live Blog

Well, yes it is sport, but it is the Olympic Games so as games they are valid fodder for this blog.

Opening Ceremony Live On Channel 7 HD

(Times are Australian Eastern Standard Time - 2 hours ahead of Beijing)

21:50 - Olympics in HD baby. Volume turned up for drums.

21:51 - Aw kids are cute. Not so for TV host who doesn't bother welcoming Tasmania. Oh, the HD coverage has stopped. Standard def now shows a weather report. Looks like they screwed up the switch locally.

21:55 - Finally back to the Opening Ceremony. 'Bout time. The Giggling One and I are a right pair of geeks sitting on the couch with our laptops.

21:57 - Cool drums that light up. Epilepsy fits ensue.

21:59 - Drum light count down. Wow!

22:00 - Must watch TV and not computer screen. Chinese mega haka.

22:05 - Drums, glow sticks and fireworks. Very impressive.

22:06 - Dem rings they are a flying.

22:09 - Obligatory cute as buttons kids.

22:12 - Disconcerting the way the HD signal cuts to generic scenic pictures during ad breaks.

22:16 - The great Chinese tradition of RPGs is shown with the unveiling of a scroll. I think it involves finding the man with the leaky hand.

22:20 - Someone stuck giant darts in all their heads.

22:26 - They should have done Space Invaders on their giant typewriter. Nonetheless very impressive. Again.

22:28 - Puppets! Recreating the lonely goatherd scene from The Sound of Music by the looks of it.

22:34 - The oar dancing is seriously impressive.

22:38 - Thanks to the commentator I now know that the history of China is very sumptuous. Feeling peckish?

22:41 - No safety nets for the guys on the pillars? Quick, call the Health & Safety Rep.

22:44 - Chinese fluoro disco dancers.

    22:45 - The disco guys form a giant dove/blob.

22:47 - The Beijing Nikki Webster. She's got a crappy music career ahead.

22:51 - These Channel 7 commentators are AWFUL. Where are Roy & HG when you need them?

22:58 - According to the commentators the birds on the giant screens are symbolic of the green games...in a city of smog.

23:00 - The Giggling One has just found an online news site article about the whole opening ceremony written in the past tense with a post time of one hour in the future from now. It's a time travel conspiracy.

23:07 - Hoorah - the commentators have been given the boot and Bruce McAveney is in the chair. Just in time for more drumming. They like drums in China.

23:09 - Ah, now we find why Bruce and Sandy Roberts are behind the mic now - it's time for the competitors to come in.

23:10 - Greece enters first. Who woulda thunk it?

23:11 - We get a lesson in the Chinese alphabet as Guinea come in 2nd followed by Guinea-Bissau. Then we have Turkey.

23:12 - The marshals are going to get very tired if they have to bounce for the whole parade.

23:13 - OK, I'm not blogging every team. Instead I'll see what facts I can share from the wisdom of Bruce and Sandy.

23:18 - "When you think of Bhutan, you think of archery." Um...OK.

23:29 - OMG, there are 204 countries marching? I didn't realise there were that many. *stifles yawn*

    23:40 - Chad's 100m runner is 15 years old. Fast little blighter.

23:45 - As well as blogging, I'm chatting with friends on Skype and we're creating a drinking game to get us through the parade. So far it's a drink every time judo is mentioned, every time we spot a handy cam, and whenever "Dick Pound" is mentioned.

23:53 - We're not drinking enough. We've added mentions of greco roman wrestling, and shots of Juan Antonio Samaranch.

    00:00 - "Judo"! *drinks*

00:02 - The bagpipes are back. *drinks*

00:06 - "Judo"! *drinks* ... Handy cam! *drinks* ... Are we half way yet?

00:09 - The Giggling One (also participating in the drinking game) thought the "Albania" sign said "Alabama". I think she's keeping an eye out for Connecticut.

00:21 - Poor Bolivia have been competing since 1936, but haven't won a medal.

00:22 - The dancing usher girls are running out of puff.

00:27 - The USA team look like golfers.

00:42 - Four "judo"s in a minute. Thank frak we've stopped the handy cam spotting. I couldn't handle both.

00:57 - New Zealand. Led by a man wearing a dead sheep.

01:06 - Team #202: Australia! And aren't their uniforms awful. Though according to Sandy the uniforms are "quite sensational". Idiot. The Giggling One was more on the money. She said they put half their uniforms in a bucket of bleach.

01:09 - Finally China arrive to a thunderous reception (as you would expect).

01:23 - All the teams are in and we can now begin the final part of the ceremony. Hoorah!

01:34 - Wake me when the speeches are over...

01:36 - The games are declared open! (at least I think that's what he said)

01:44 - Soldiers steal the Olympic flag!

01:46 - Soldiers have a change of heart and raise the flag.

01:57 - Go the old fat bastards with the flame.

    02:01 - He flies!

    02:05 - We have fire!

02:08 - It's over! A pretty damn impressive event. Here's to the next 16 days.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 12 & Finale Recap

Five housemates survived to see out the final week.

    So what happened?

Well if you don't already know then what kind of Big Brother fan are you???

But I suppose I'd better finish off the final Big Brother recap ever (or "for now" according to Jackie O, repeatedly. Let it go Jackie).

  • After Cherry's eviction on Day 77, Big Brother hit the housemates with The Big Sting.
  • Each housemate was made to cast one vote with the HM with the most votes being evicted.
  • Of course, it was all fake, but it put the housemates through all kinds of emotional hell. You go get 'em BB.
  • For the record, Alice voted for Rory but then changed her mind to Ben; Ben and Rory both voted for Alice; Terri voted for Travis; and Travis voted for Terri.
  • With 2 votes, a shocked and annoyed Alice was "evicted" and taken to a studio to deliver her Hand Grenade.
  • The Hand Grenade turned out to be another fake snap eviction. The HMs were not happy campers.
  • Travis was up first this time, and voted for Terri, while the nanna also stuck with her original vote and went with Travis.
  • After claiming the whole process was inhumane, a seriously pissed off Rory voted for Travis, and Ben then did the same.
  • So Travis joined Alice in fake eviction land, but not before bursting into tears.
  • After Travis delivered his farewell message, he and Alice were told they were not really evicted, and they danced with joy. You might think that Alice in particular might have harboured some resentment towards BB for putting her through that, but she was obviously overwhelmed by the sheer joy of getting to remain in the house with her beloved treadmill.
  • Alice and Travis delivered a new message to the HMs, telling them a surprise awaited in the backyard. The surprise, of course, was their return.
  • Rory was still majorly peeved, and even after BB apologised for messing with their minds (under the pretty weak pretext that it was all an exercise to reveal more of the HMs' characters so the public could make a more informed decision over who they would nominate (we've had 77 days to study the HMs so far but that obviously wasn't enough)) Rory told BB what a dog's act the evening was.
  • Day 78 (Monday) saw a huge pile of clothing dropped into the backyard for the weekly task. The HMs had to iron and fold half a ton of clothing for charity.
  • Alice won an extended date with BB after all the HMs went on a speed date with him. She even danced with an imaginary BB in the Diary Room.
  • Tuesday was Care Package Day, aka Don't Even Think About Taking Away My Beautiful Darling Treadmill You Bastards Day.
  • Terri, Ben and Travis all had care packages from home in the vending machine (Alice and Rory received their care packages last Saturday after the silent dancing marathon), but only two were available for purchase.
  • As Terri received a letter from home last week, Ben opted to but his and Travis' packages, but then lamented to BB that he didn't get Terri's package.
  • BB offered Ben a deal: trade the treadmill for Terri's care package. The catch was that Terri couldn't find out.
  • Well Terri did find out because, after having the proposal put to her, Alice went into a major, and none too quiet, strop. How dare BB and the other HMs suggest her precious treadmill be taken away!
  • Rory suggested that perhaps Alice might be able to do without it for the five remaining days (a reasonable suggestion I think you would agree), but oh no, that was completely unfair.
  • Terri cottoned on to the scheme after Alice's rants reverberated around the compound, so BB called the deal off...
  • ...until the next day. On Wednesday BB told the other HMs that if they ironed a full basket of clothes each within an hour, and without Terri finding out, then Terri would get her care package.
  • Keeping Terri in the bedroom and bathroom under the pretext of National Nanna Day, the HMs succeeded to secretly iron the clothes. Unfortunately, BB disallowed the effort because the HMs weren't wearing their Iron Man costumes while ironing.
  • Not to be dissuaded, Rory then proposed the HMs perform an Iron Man themed play for Terri. BB said it would be a hoot and gave them the OK.
  • Terri was very entertained by the play, so was finally awarded her care package. Hoorah!
  • That night, after further discussing Alice's treadmill addiction (well, not an "addiction" according to Alice, but she could well do with a few Treadmill Lovers Anonymous meetings), some of the HMs pondered whether the moon was full or not, with Ben suggesting that the moon became full every fortnight. There's a bright lad.
  • On Thursday, BB supplied bricks, cement and tools for the HMs to build a letterbox.
  • Rory and his apprentice Travis built the letterbox at Travis pace (kind of like "snails pace" except five times slower) and completed it after six hours.
  • Ben was readmitted to the house after his kombi banishment.
  • Travis was relieved of his head chef duties, much to the pleasure of the other HMs.
  • BB took the night off, allowing the other HMs to play at being BB and ask each other questions with the aid of a voice altering loudspeaker.
  • The Friday Night Live Grand Final came along and included some amusing moments - most notably Travis, eyes tightly shut, clutching a cake to his chest while chanting "the devil wears Prada" over and over again as he was hauled 25 metres into the air.
  • After some dubious scoring by Big Brother (I still maintain Travis won), and some slime dumping on HMs' loved ones, BB awarded the Grand Final trophy to Rory.
  • Saturday was a fairly uneventful day in the house. BB served the HMs an eviction notice, and the HMs were told they passed the ironing task.

Five became three on Sunday night with a double eviction. Last week's fake evictees became real evictees when Alice and Travis were shown the door.

The final episode of Big Brother, at least in its current iteration, aired last night.

Past winners were brought on stage and asked a question or two (except for Big Brother #2 winner Peter who was practically ignored).

Gretel managed to say a word from the Rocky Horror stage.

The final three HMs got messages from home and the traditional news update.

The previously evicted housemates performed a dance routine on stage that was actually pretty good.

During the show we were shown voting graphs, and while we were told they'd only show the names with the percentages at the beginning of the night, the producers got scared that Ben might actually win by being ignored in the voting (as it was still voting to evict instead of to win which was really dumb) and showed the names again later in the evening when Ben was leading.

It worked perfectly as Ben was evicted.

The final two were then reunited with their loved ones inside the house (Terri's daughter and grandson, and Rory's mother and brother) before they were brought on stage.

    And the winner is......Terri!!!

Yes, the nanna who was evicted on the first night, came back to win. Yay for Tezza!!!!

I've been thinking about my overall impression of this year's Big Brother. The closest I can get is "ambivalent". There were moments of inspired greatness, moments of boring seen-it-before blandness, and moments of what-the-hell-were-you-thinking-you-idiotic-producers dumbfoundedness. I guess that's what you get with Big Brother. It was funny yet frustrating. It wasn't anywhere near the standards of the early series, but in my opinion it surpassed the nonsense of the last two years. Even KyJO were passable. Just. An extended period off before a revamping on another network could be just what the BB doctor ordered.

    Here's hoping.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 11 Recap

Well, it's nearly time to say goodbye my friends. With only one week remaining and Channel 10 finally axing Big Brother, this could well be the penultimate Big Brother Recap EVER.

    /cue violins

Bah, sod the violins - let's trash the place.

Week 11 saw the mid-week departure of Malibu, aka Blonde-zilla, aka Brigitte.

But, as usual, there were a few other things happening inside the house...

  • In her farewell message, Bianca gave her share of the cash to Ben, then promptly threw her Housemate Hand Grenade at him. She decided he needed to be a better spooner, so she made him the cook.
  • Ben was to be aided in the kitchen only by the other non-cooks Travis, Malibu and Cherry.
  • For the weekly task, housemates had to dress as paparazzi, and when the sound of clicking cameras was played in the house, they had 90 seconds to snap pictures of celebs who appeared throughout the house, either as a photo behind a mirror or a look-alike in the rewards window.
  • This was, of course, all a set-up for the entrance of a real celebrity on Wednesday night.
  • Still on Sunday, though, and Terri and Travis had a talk about caesarians. Terri informed Travis the procedure was named after Julius Caesar who was the first to be born that way, and the conversation continued as follows:

TRAVIS: That would have been like years and years ago.
TERRI: Yeah thousands...oh hundreds of years ago.
TRAVIS: Oh I don't think hundreds of...it would have been 200 years ago. Julius Caesar was around back in, um, Jesus' times, and Jesus was, um, walking around 200 years ago I think.

Yup, that's Travis. He goes to church every week and knows the story of Jesus like the back of his hand.

  • Ben found himself in trouble when he accidentally threw a ball against the water tanks and broke the level indicator, causing water to pour out. According to Big Brother, more than 4,000 litres were lost.
  • Ben was consequently made to conserve water, and was banned from the shower, with only a bucket and loofah to wash himself. And that was just the beginning.
Monday's nominations saw Rory top the charts with 8 points, followed by Cherry, Ben and Terri all on 3. After Cherry saved himself, Malibu and Alice (2 points) also ended up being nominated. This left just Travis (0 points) out of the eviction spotlight this week.
  • After a Paris Hilton look-alike appeared in the window, Cherry showed what a lovely fellow (read: shallow tosser) he is by asking BB if she would be back, and could he have her number.
  • Ben decided to get around the washing in a bucket thing by washing plates in the laundry, and "accidentally" letting the hot water wash him at the same time.
  • Unfortunately for Ben, he couldn't stop there, and he rebelled further by using the outside shower. As punishment, Rory had to wash with only one bucket a day as well.
  • Under the cover of darkness/infra-red cameras, Malibu and Cherry engaged in some bed time snogging.
  • Rather than buying Alice and Malibu a hairdressing appointment, Cherry instead bought a ball and rackets, and a message from home for Terri from the vending machine.
  • Obviously keen for the girls to have their hair done for a certain photoshoot planned for later in the week, Big Brother offered Alice and Malibu a deal. They could have their hair cut, coloured, and styled if they gave up the treadmill. Bizarrely, they declined the offer. They had less than 2 weeks to go for goodness sake and they couldn't do without the treadmill? Couldn't they run around the garden?
  • The ever-petulant Malibu continued to whine about her hair, and when Rory mimicked her she just had to have the last laugh so she put chilli powder in Rory's locker.
  • Ben continued to defy Big Brother, and washed himself again while doing the dishes in the outside sink. Unfortunately, he came off second best once more when Big Brother confined him to the yard, meaning he became the kombi's fourth resident of the series.

On Wednesday night, the housemates were hit with news of a snap eviction.

We saw Pamela Anderson arrive on stage in an outfit that would look skimpy on a Barbie.

We were also treated to an on stage interview with Malibu's "friend" Eric. The producers originally intended to have a confrontation between Eric and Malibu's father, but this was pulled once they knew Malibu was going to be evicted. Consequently, we instead saw Eric grilled by Kyle over certain things he'd said about Malibu on the internet (ie. behindbigbrother.com), to which Eric refused to say anything. Great TV that then.

So a devastated Malibu was evicted, with Princess Sparkles in hand, and was reunited with her doting, insipid parents on stage. It was somewhat satisfying to gain some evil pleasure on seeing Malibu freak out when she learned that Eric had been interviewed earlier.

  • Back in the house, Pamela Anderson appeared in the rewards window for the paparazzi task. The HMs speculate whether it was really her, but in the end they decide it probably wasn't.
  • Rory was called to the Diary Room where he met Pamela, though he initially believed she was a look-alike.
  • Pamela entered the house, met the housemates, and got a house tour. The housemates couldn't stop taking photos of her.
  • The HMs enjoyed a vegetarian banquet with Pamela before she left for the evening.
  • To no-one's surprise, Malibu's Housemate Hand Grenade was lobbed at Rory. He could only eat what basic, dull food Big Brother supplied for him.
  • On Thursday morning, Pamela returned and directed a photoshoot of the housemates.
  • Pamela enjoyed oiling up the boys, and was probably a tad annoyed at Travis' inability to take direction. Regardless of what he was told, the lad was unable to have a photo taken without making a silly face.
  • With Malibu evicted, Ben confined to the garden, and Cherry unable to help because he was Head of House, Travis was the only person left who was allowed to cook. Despite being warned not to help him, Terri did so, so Big Brother confiscated their dinner.
  • Was Travis pissed off like any normal person? Of course not. He remained possimistic and was happy he got a chance to cook again.
  • Thursday also saw the other HMs give Terri a hilarious emo make-over.
Friday night's FNL was Circus Night, with the HMs dressed as clowns.
  • A number of point scoring rounds were played, with Ben, Alice and Terri topping the leaderboard.
  • Travis joined back in after winning the second chance pie-eating round, and then made it to the final against Ben.
  • Ben was victorious, becoming Head of House (but was still stuck in the yard) as well as winning a shiny new 42" plasma TV.
  • Pamela then returned for her final visit to give the HMs their photos.
  • Amusingly, Pamela was made to do 10 push ups by the HMs after she said the banned word "mine" in the HM's game.
  • To cap off their Friday night, the HMs had a slumber party with giant teddy bears, and individual pillows and doonas.
  • On Saturday, the housemates were given a new challenge - a silent disco marathon. They had to dress in lurid 80s clothing, and dance to a rotation of 4 pop songs on their mp3 players while remaining on their assigned discs.
  • Cherry was eliminated first when he stepped off his disc, and commenced sabotaging the other HMs by contaminating their water bottles with things such as pumpkin and tuna.
  • After an incredible 10 hours of non-stop dancing, Alice and Rory were declared joint winners, with each winning a parcel from home.

Sunday's eviction was entirely predictable with Cherry given the boot. That is all. Until next week. Then it really will be all. Unless Channel 7 pick up BB as has been suggested. Might be interesting.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 10 Recap

The mole was the focus of Week 10's Big Brother. Prime fodder for ranting also presented itself this week, manifested by the reprehensible behaviour of Rebecca Wilson on Big Mouth. More on that shortly. Meanwhile, the recap begins last Sunday night...

  • Terrence's Housemate Hand Grenade was more of a Housemate Party Popper. He reversed Knobbi's earlier Hand Grenade, meaning Terri could return from the kombi to the house. He also removed the hair straightener.
  • Nominations were sprung on the housemates on Sunday night, with Bianca and Rory amassing 7 points each, while Alice gained 4 points. Having earlier voted for both Bianca and Rory, Cherry saved Alice, although he didn't really want to. This put Terri and Travis in the firing line for eviction as well.
  • Rima told the house they had 3 days to uncover a mythical mole, and the other HMs bought it hook, line, sinker, rod and copy of Angling Times (bonus points for identifying the reference).
  • Terri and Alice immediately speculated the mole was Ben, while Cherry, Ben and Malibu thought it might be Rory.
  • Basically, the HMs went crazy trying to work it out.
  • For the weekly task, the HMs had to become wrestlers and, when their individual theme tunes were played, dress in their costumes and race to the ring in the backyard within 90 seconds. Once there, they had to wrestle a ninja dummy.
  • BB gave the HMs suitable characters for the task. Ben was "The Prosecutor", Bianca was "The Iron Maiden", Malibu was "Blonde-zilla", Alice was "The Determinator", Cherry was "Cherry Bomb", Rory is "The Roaring Lion" (rather lame name really), Travis was "Captain Possimistic", and Terri was "Naughty Nanna".

We interrupt this recap of happenings in the BB House for a special rant. Monday night is Big Mouth night, and one person in particular really needed to keep her big mouth shut.

As usual, the evictee from the previous night ventured on to the Big Mouth set. Unfortunately, this particular evictee was Terrence, and he wasn't so much walking on to a set, as walking into a carefully contrived execution.

While in the house, Terrence had speculated that Malibu, given her shocking lack of good manners and her blatant rudeness towards Terrence, might have not had particularly good parenting. So the Big Mouth producers ambushed him with Malibu's uppity father on the phone during the show. Ostensibly an opportunity to discuss Malibu and her behaviour, the segment instead degenerated into a two pronged assault on Terrence. It was excruciating to watch.

Rebecca Wilson even had the gall to defend Malibu's nasty outburst of "at least you got one you cry baby" after Terrence cried when his wife wasn't in his video message from home. When this was brought up, Wilson jumped in with a spiteful "Well deserved".

No, Rebecca, it wasn't. Yes Terrence was an annoying old bloke who, while seemingly oblivious to the reaction of the housemates to his stories, was secretly enjoying antagonising them a little. That in no way means he deserved to be ridiculed and treated with utter disrespect by Malibu, or her father or Rebecca Wilson for that matter.

And you want to know the nail in the coffin for Wilson's credibility (not that she had much to begin with)? When they brought on "one of the world's most respected psychics" (a contradiction in terms if ever there was one), Wilson revealed she was a total believer and had actually had her house cleared of spirits. Seriously.

    Back to the recap...

  • Bianca began what was probably the storyline that would book her ticket out of the house by saying that she would never speak to the mole again, simply for lying to her. I think Bianca had become so involved with her environment, she had forgotten it was a game.
  • Bianca took her mind off mole issues by luring Ben to the kombi and finally getting him to (awkwardly) spoon her.
  • More mole speculation followed on Day 65, with suspicion falling on Malibu.
  • Cherry bought clues to the mole's identity from the vending machine, but the HMs were disappointed when all the clues said were that the mole wasn't Terri or Rory.
  • BB spiced things up in the mole hunt by calling Malibu to the Diary Room then planting a pen on the chair after she left. The ruse worked as the next person in the Diary Room, Cherry, discovered the pen and questioned Malibu about it.
  • Terri told Alice she thought there might not be a mole, but Alice was quick to shut her down and say there had to be. Poor Alice was so caught up in the excitement of a mole, she really wasn't thinking logically.
  • On Wednesday the HMs finally had to say who they thought the mole was.
  • Rory and Alice said they thought it was Malibu.
  • Malibu asked if she could pick herself, but forced to pick someone she went with Alice.
  • Bianca jumped on the Malibu bandwagon.
  • Travis said he thought there was no mole, but I suspect he did this only because he didn't want to go through the trauma of actually picking someone. Forced into a corner, he reluctantly picked Malibu then burst into tears.
  • Terri and Ben also nominated Malibu as the mole. After Ben said that he thought the evidence added up to Malibu, the blonde brainiac told the other HMs they were all bad at maths.
  • Last to say who he thought was the mole, Cherry decided to go with his gut and picked Alice.
  • Her mission complete, Rima was spirited away from the house (unpsychically) without the other HMs' knowledge.
  • Even before the truth was revealed, Bianca became emotional, crying as she and Rory second guessed themselves and thought that maybe they should have nominated Ben as the mole instead.
  • Alice too became annoyed because Cherry hadn't told her he thought she was the mole. Hello Alice? It's a game. You don't always want to show your hand and tell your suspect you think it's them.
  • Rima then appeared on the TV screen to say she had left the house, and that the mole was not Malibu. She continued on to say that her Housemate Hand Grenade was to mess with the HMs heads as there was no mole.
  • Cue the fireworks. Storming off in a bleeped out fury, Bianca vented her anger on Terri's innocent washing, drying in the backyard. She firmly stated she'd never talk to Rima again.
  • Ben agreed that the whole mole thing was nasty.
  • Terri tried to defuse Bianca by telling her not to let Rima win, but then burst into tears herself.
  • Cherry, easily the biggest game player in the house, took it all in his stride as he saw the game side of the task.
  • Things calmed down somewhat on Day 67.
  • Rory was amusingly called to the wrestling ring while buried neck deep in the sandpit.
  • Terri proved she couldn't bounce a football.
  • Bianca resumed chasing Ben.
  • The HMs made cardboard cut outs of each other, with Rory reprimanded for making a cut out of Rima as a mole with a knife in her back.
  • Friday saw Travis get a new haircut, from Bianca, that wasn't much better than Knobbi's earlier hatchet job.
  • At FNL #10, as it was the 4th of July, the HMs were dressed as New York Yankees baseballers for "I Love New York Night"
  • The most amusing thing during the night was when Terrence joined the hosts on stage and, while relating how people have reacted to his time in the house, said his son was told "We saw your dad's dick on national TV". The producers quickly jumped on to the bleeper to edit out the naughty "d word", but stuffed it up so what we actually heard was "We saw your [bleep] dick [bleep] TV". Hilarious.
  • Cherry's competitive nature was shown once more as he beat Bianca in the final to win his second straight FNL.
  • As a reward, Cherry won a 4th of July banquet for himself and three others. He chose Rory, Alice and Ben to join him in the strategy room cinema banquet room.
  • Saturday saw the HMs told they had passed the wrestling task. Despite the task having the potential to be good viewing, and while we saw some humorous moments, it barely registered on the daily show after Monday which was disappointing.
  • Saturday also saw Bianca sneak into the Diary Room as Alice was leaving, only to be told by Big Brother to leave and ring the bell. Unfortunately, the temper tantrum queen slammed the door on the way out, causing a "maintenance issue" with the door and preventing her from re-entering.
  • While Ben continued to spurn Bianca's advances, Cherry was rewarded for his own persistence as Malibu finally let him snuggle with her.

Eviction Show #9 saw Terri and Travis saved before Bianca was evicted.

I think we all saw the writing on the wall for Bianca after her dog of a week. And what is it with the word "dog"? Everything negative in the house is a dog. Rima's deception was "a dog act". People keep "dogging" other people".

Well, only two weeks of dogging remain, with seven housemates still in the house.

A snap eviction will take place this Wednesday, along with some obscure blonde American woman going in to the house. Oh the anticipation.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 9 Recap

The kombi and the train station were the focus of week 9 in the BB house.

  • After being evicted, Knobbi threw his Housemate Hand Grenade at Terri, sending her to replace him in the kombi. In a further twist, Terrence was banished to the kombi as well.
  • Terri and Terrence became the Grey Nomads, and showed their age when they couldn't work out how to answer the kombi's mobile phone.
  • The weekly task was all about trainspotting. The housemates had to pair up and wait at the Big Brother station (the stage in the back yard) until their (toy) train came along. They then had to memorise the number on the train.
  • Malibu and Ben took the first shift on the train platform as business commuters.
  • In keeping with the humour of the task, Big Brother made announcements by tannoy.
  • Nominations took place, of course, on Monday. Terrence (6 points), Rory (6) and Malibu (5) were the nominees, but as the winner of FNL, Malibu saved herself. Bianca (3 points) replaced her as a nominee.
  • Still on Monday, Malibu had another shift at the train station, this time with Terrence. Unable to cope with the annoying old bloke, Malibu proceeded to vandalise the station.
  • Rory told other HMs that Travis was doing his head in. Unfortunately Travis overheard and made it even worse for Rory by insisting on a chat.
  • Tuesday is Vending Machine Day in the BB house, and this week there were Hand Grenade reversals on offer (though not for the Grey Nomads). Unsurprisingly these were what Malibu opted to buy, thereby reversing Bianca's, Cherry's and her own Hand Grenade.
  • So Malibu finally got her stuff back. Awwww.
  • Unable to sleep that night, as BB wouldn't turn the bedroom lights off, most of the housemates went outside and decided to have fun at the Grey Nomads' expense.
  • After throwing balls against the kombi, Cherry turned the hose on the van, giving Terri and Terrence a leaky present.
  • Stoically, the kombi residents ignored the dripping water, and somehow managed to remain calm when Malibu then opened the kombi door and completely drenched them with the hose, then threw flour on them for good measure.

Some people say funny. I say over the top. Poor form.

  • The following day, Terrence managed to keep Terri calm as she dried out the contents of the kombi. The ring leaders of the attacks were rightfully told off by Big Brother.

In my opinion, this is where the Australian BB house could do with the small jail that the UK BB house has in their back yard at the moment. Spending a few hours behind bars would serve Malibu right.

  • Day 60 (Thursday) was so full of excitement that I could barely keep up. My solitary note reads "Rory teaches Travis how to lay bricks". As I said: excitement.
  • In another blatant cross promotion (so much so I have half a mind to rename the series Blatant Brother) FNL #9 was Spy Night. Cherry beat Malibu in a game of snap (?!!??) to win the night.
  • Cherry chose to take Malibu, Bianca and Terrence to watch the new Get Smart movie with him.
  • On Saturday, the HMs had to place all the train numbers they spotted during the week on a board in the correct order. They did so correctly, and passed the task.
  • Terrence was made to clean the windows in the back yard for talking without his microphone on, sparking an angry retort from Ben aimed at Big Brother. Methinks Ben is struggling with authority at the moment, for after he was forced to join Terrence washing the windows, he dissed Big Brother again and had to clean the windows alone.
  • Malibu showed her astronomical intelligence once again by eating hair wax.
  • The HMs enjoyed a costume party and pole dancing on Saturday night as a reward for passing the trainspotting task.
  • Having woken up the other housemates bright and early on Saturday morning just to get some ingredients for a cup of tea, Malibu and Ben returned the favour in the early hours of Sunday morning by opening the kombi door and waking the Grey Nomads with a cacophony of shouting and saucepan banging. After Malibu and Ben left, Terrence and Terrigave us this little gem:

Terrence: I'm going to photocopy Brigitte's brain.
Terri: Are you going to build me an idiot?

    Gold.

On to the eviction where we saw that Rima did indeed return to the house.

After Malibu told the other HMs she saved herself ("I saved me because duh.") and Bianca found out she was nominated, KyJO announced Rory was saved.

Then Terrence got evicted. I saw it coming, but I really wish it had been Rory.

Rima then went in to the house on a secret mission. She has to tell the other HMs a fib, and say that one of them was a mole. Not exactly what I'd call a "secret" mission. Especially after she mentioned she had a secret mission as soon as she got inside.

It has also been confirmed that super bimbo Pamela Anderson will enter the house next week, also on a secret mission. Just when you thought the show couldn't stoop any lower hey? Rumours are that this is when the fake eviction will take place.

Edit: But wait, the show reached brand new heretofore unknown depths on this week's episode of Big Mouth. More on next week's recap.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 8 Recap

A clever and amusing task twist, along with the eviction of Knobbi were the highlights of Week 8 in the Big Brother house.

  • Beginning with last Sunday, and after the lamest treasure hunt in recorded history, the HMs discovered the $250,000 prize money hiding in the Diary Room chair.
  • In another pointless gimmick, evicted HMs get to pass their share (which begins at $25,000 initially) to the HM of their choice upon eviction. Why? It all ends up with one person anyway. If the prize money were divided between the final 2 HMs, then that would make it interesting.
  • Monday's nominations saw Cherry and Terrence lead the pack with 5 points each. Rory and Alice followed them with 4 points. Knobbi saved Rory from the chop, only to replace him as a nominee along with Malibu and Terri.

Just while we're on nominations, why is that nominated housemates (and Big Brother for that matter) refer to themselves as being "up for nomination"? All HMs are up for nomination (unless exempted like newly arrived intruders). Once you've been nominated you are then up for eviction. Get it right!

  • The HMs were told their task for the week was to "paddle" a canoe (on wheels) away from a shark before the protective net drops all the way after the shark alarm sounded.
  • Knobbi and Bianca were then told the shark task wasn't real, and to pass this week, the pair had to join the Secret Order of Moon Monks and secretly worship the moon in a ritual at 2 o'clock every morning. Bianca was given a watch to aid with this task.
  • The Moon Monks also had to avoid direct sunlight, so as a cover story, in front of other HMs, Bianca challenged Knobbi not to go out in the sun all week.
Bianca and Knobbi succeeded with their secret worship on night one, completing their secret handshake and chanting undetected.

On another side note, the task was great. It had the humour factor, along with the suspense factor making it great viewing.

  • On Tuesday, Knobbi finally relented and bought the hair straightener from the vending machine to shut the women up.
  • Cherry became the third Moon Monk and the second ritual went off undetected.
Some dirty laundry was aired at Wednesday night dinner, with Rory and Cherry claiming each was the most untrustworthy, and Alice stating she thought Ben was going under the radar.
  • In more spa pashing, Travis was horrified to be on the receiving end of a major snog from Alice.
  • Knowing the shark task was fake, Knobbi embarked on a campaign to sabotage it, much to the annoyance of the other HMs who wanted food next week. Sure Knobbi needed amusement, but he rather recklessly risked his own task by sabotaging the shark task.
  • Alice joined the other three Moon Monks for another successful worshipping session in the early hours of Thursday.
  • Flirting was the go on Thursday as Ben & Bianca, and Cherry & Malibu spent time together. Cherry, however, later told Big Brother he and Malibu had "pulled the pin" on their relationship and were "just friends". Aha.
  • In an evil twist, Big Brother added two new HMs to the Secret Order of the Moon Monks: Terri and Malibu. With 6 HMs in the Order, and only 4 unaware of its existence, things became much trickier for the worshippers' plans. Somehow, they got away with it.
  • In FNL, the HMs participated in Bogan Night Heavy Metal Night. The semi final saw the four remaining HMs in an air guitar competition. The judging was completely arbitrary as Malibu and Travis made it through.
  • Malibu was victorious and as a reward, took Travis, Alice and Terri in to the BB Cinema to see her favourite movie: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
  • Friday also saw Terrence become the final Moon Monk and despite Big Brother playing the shark siren in the middle of their worshipping, the 7 Monks were not caught, and returned to complete the ceremony successfully, passing the task. Well done to the Moon Monks I say,
  • Malibu continued her nasty attitude towards Terrence and her flirting with Cherry, though she somehow didn't see it as flirting. She really is simple.

On eviction night, Alice, Terrence and Cherry were removed to one eviction room, while Malibu, Terri and Knobbi were sent to another. We were then shown a graph that displayed one HM as having 66% of the eviction vote. KyJO speculated as to who it could be, which was rather farcical as we all knew it was Knobbi.

After having earlier removed references from the official website regarding a particular incident of willy exposure in the spa, the speculation from certain other sources (ie. eyeonbigbrother.com) forced KyJO into "discussing" the incident on TV with Knobbi in an obvious attempt to show they had "dealt with it". Rather pathetic really, and even though the incident was later to be discussed with Knobbi on Big Mouth, all Knobbi got was a proverbial and friendly smack on the hand.

After padding the show out further while certain housemates were saved, it was finally time for Knobbi to get his arse kicked out of the house. Sayonara sunshine.

For once I wish Gretel were back hosting because she would have torn into Knobbi rather than the Kyle-love and Jackie-lameness that he got. Aargh. The BBUK crowd would have booed him all the way home, which is what he really deserved.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 7 Recap

Twas a rather bland week in the Aus BB house to be frank. Not all that much to go the snark about. So, here's the boring recap:

  • After being evicted, Renee's Housemate Hand Grenade was to deprive Malibu of a message from home. Malibu was, once again, a little miffed.
  • The HMs were advised of this week's task: in a blatant cross promotion with Adam Sandler's new movie, they had to play at being hairdressers.
  • Each HM would be both a hairdresser and a hairdressee during the week, styling wigs in particular styles while keeping up constant conversation.
  • The nominees decided on Monday were Knobbi, Terrence and Alice. FNL winner Knobbi saved himself of course, and was replaced by the other two intruders Rhianna and Cherry.
  • Rory's relationship with Rhianna continued through the week, growing from cuddles to kissing to, well, naughty digitally manipulative things involving adult time slots.
  • Knobbi decided to talk gibberish to Terrence in an effort to stop his boring stories. Terrence later cottoned on to this and gave as good as he got.
  • On vending machine day, Knobbi ignored the majority request for a hair straightener and bought Malibu's party dress, a footy and frisbee, and chocolate instead. Some HMs applauded Knobbi for sticking to his earlier commitment not to get the hair straightener. They say it was honourable. I say it was stubbornness.
  • On Day 45, HMs received video messages from home. Except Malibu of course. In protest, Malibu lay in the Diary Room doorway until Big Brother asked her to move.
  • Terrence got upset and cried when his wife didn't appear in his video message. Malibu was not remotely sympathetic when she told him "At least you got one".
  • Cherry declared to all and sundry that he hates Rhianna. Is this a way to get in with the other boys? What a nasty piece of work he is.
  • At FNL, Knobbi won again. *sigh*
  • Knobbi won a viewing of the Adam Sandler movie they'd been plugging all week, and he took Rory, Ben and Travis with him.
  • Knobbi apologised to Cherry for not taking him in to see the movie, causing the girls to think Knobbi was trying to recruit Cherry to his gang.
  • While Knobbi and co were watching the movie, Cherry plotted to oust Knobbi by trying to give him the 4th most votes, meaning he'd be nominated regardless of who is saved.
  • Rhianna later dobbed on Cherry to Rory who told Knobbi the next morning.
  • Cherry and Malibu were given strikes for discussing the nomination of Knobbi. A lovely way for Malibu to start her 21st birthday on Saturday.
  • Malibu's day got better when she had her party (wearing one of Bianca's dresses). All the HMs boarded (read "squeezed into") the Big Brother Airways "Lear Jet" and arrived in Sparkle Land - all pink and bubbly and sparkly.
  • Malibu finally got her message from home with a birthday video message from her family.
  • Malibu was also given Princess Sparkles back as a birthday present from Big Brother. Spoilt brat. I don't see Big Brother giving in to Knobbi and letting him back in the house.
  • Afterwards, the housemates crowded back into the tiny plane only to be informed the return flight would last 6 hours. It's times like this I love Big Brother.

The Eviction Show was fairly uneventful. We saw that part of the backyard was converted into a dig site, with a treasure chest containing a riddle to the location of the $250,000 prize buried somewhere under the sand.

After Cherry was saved (I hoped he'd be going) it was Rhianna who got the boot.

Finally, the housemates were told the prize money was hidden in the house somewhere. But first they had to dig in the backyard to find puzzle pieces which told them where another chest was containing a clue. Only that clue was destroyed by water so Big Brother supplied another one, and in no time flat they found the money in the Diary Room chair.

How lame a treasure hunt was that? Oh, and also lame - the gimmick that evicted housemates have to choose one of the remaining housemates to give their share of the prize money ($25,000 initially). Erm, it all ends up with one person anyway, so it's rather pointless don't you think?

    BBUK Musings

Six or so days in and I and The Giggling One are loving Big Brother UK as usual. The wedding task was a corker - setting housemates against each other right from the start.

But it's one particular HM I wanted to blog about very quickly.

    Alexandra.

I had to leave her in a paragraph all to herself just in case she attacks the rest of this post.

Admittedly, I've only seen the last series (8) of BBUK as well as part of the very first one, but Alexandra has to be the most aggressive, nasty, rude, sour person I've seen.

She dishes out criticism wherever she thinks it's warranted (and she believes it's warranted just about everywhere) but can't take it when the target of her attacks tries to defend themselves, or worse attack her back.

Take the chip incident a couple of nights ago. To her credit, Rebecca had a crack at helping with dinner by cooking the chips. She didn't do a very good job, but most HMs ate them without comment.

Not Alexandra. She commented to Sylvia about how Rex should do all the cooking from then on (he's a chef) and continued her tirade against the cooking. Alexandra went on the attack again after dinner, and when Becs tried to defend herself Alex just shouted her down.

Then, when Rachael and Stephanie try to defend Becs as well, Alexandra just shifted her attacks to them and took them down as well.

If you even dare to have a go at Alexandra, she'll launch another verbal assault, and when she runs out of new things to say she'll repeat herself again before finishing off with personal insults. And then she'll tell you to remember she said so.

Alexandra is this year's Charlie, but even worse if that's possible. Given the reaction of the eviction crowds to Charlie last year, I fully expect to hear chants of "Get Alex out!" on Friday nights.

Edit: Yep I was right. During the first eviction, the chants of "Get Alex out!" were so overwhelming that Davina had to go into the studio to talk to the house lest they be influenced by the chanting.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 6 Recap

Yes! It's official! Finally, the view I've maintained all along has become the majority view of BB viewers everywhere. Knobbi is indeed a nasty, slimy, lying piece of filth.

I'm just surprised it's taken some people this long to realise it.

He has been, of course, aided by the selective editing of the BB producers who have, until now, protected Knobbi and his bullying ways.

No longer however. Knobbi's bullying of Travis has finally been confronted and placed front and centre for all to cringe at.

Before I rant further, let's take a moment to go back through the week.

  • The first of the old-style nominations took place on Day 36, with Alice, Malibu and Bianca as the inaugural nominees.
  • Dixie's Housemate Hand Grenade saved Alice for the 3rd time this series, though Alice didn't find out until eviction night.
  • Replacing Alice as nominees were Terri and Renee.
  • Not surprisingly, the intruders were a hot topic of conversation, with the other men distancing themselves from Cherry in an obvious power play.
  • The weekly task was to ignore the obvious. Big Brother organised some rather amusing events that the HMs found a little too hard to ignore. Ben discovered a children's car ride in place of the Diary Room chair, Malibu sat on Santa's lap, while Terrence plonked himself down on a pavlova.
  • Knobbi completely failed to ignore a marching band that entered the garden as he and Ben became the major culprits in failing the task.
  • Bianca saw her brother and his girlfriend on the plasma, and couldn't ignore that either.
  • On the morning of Day 37 (Tuesday), the HMs woke to find the house filled with suds.
  • Bianca and Renee were still not talking after their clash on Sunday night, and Renee had even more reason to be frustrated when Bianca crashed the "boys' day" in the kitchen.
  • Ollie was replaced by a toy dog for the ignore the obvious task, leading to more window washing for Knobbi after he was punished for animal cruelty when he bounced a ball on the toy's head.
  • Terri started to teach Malibu how to knit. She'll make a nanna out of Malibu yet.
  • Bianca swiped $2,000 worth of "free cash" that BB left in the kitchen, rationalising that the house had already lost the task so she might as well take it. BB made her give it back.
  • Knobbi reprimanded Travis for talking to Alice about the lies the men spun about Alice hating Travis. In an effort to further assert his dominance, Knobbi threatened not to be Travis' friend anymore because of his so-called betrayal.
  • Cherry told BB he wanted to tap Malibu like a horse. I'm surprised he's not fitting in with Knobbi and friends with an attitude like that.
  • In a truth or dare game in the spa on Day 39, the Knobbi/Travis/Alice situation finally came to a head. Knobbi set things in motion, and had he known the fallout he may not have made the same decision again, because the person who is going to lose the most from this is Knobbi himself.
  • After asking Travis who his least favourite original housemate was, Knobbi and Rory encouraged Travis to say Alice, much to Knobbi's joy.
  • Alice cried, Travis cried, and Knobbi lied.
  • Alice justifiably chastised Knobbi for ridiculing Travis.
  • Travis finally realised he'd been used by the kombi boys and had been set up. Finally Travis, finally!
  • On the following day, Friday, Knobbi was called to the Diary Room twice. The first time was to explain himself. Knobbi said he felt no remorse. The second time, Big Brother laid down the law (why it took this long I will never know) and reprimanded Knobbi for the ridiculous haircut he gave Travis, the shower gel incident, and the spa incident. Knobbi was told to stop picking on Travis.
  • Friday Night Live was Superhero Night. Unfortunately, Knobbi the Super Tosser won after defeating Bianca in the final. This means he can save himself if he is nominated next week, and he probably will be. Our only hope is that he comes fourth in the nominations, and will thus be up regardless after he saves someone else.
  • Knobbi won a trip on BB airlines as part of his FNL prize, and he chose Rory, Ben and Bianca to go with him.
  • After a nine hour flight, the four travellers arrived at the City Dump, and of course Knobbi lamented his poor fortune once again. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
  • Ollie returned to the house for one last goodbye.
  • In no shock to anyone, the HMs were told they had failed the ignore the obvious task.

The eviction show then rolled around on Sunday night, with Mike Goldman standing in for Kyle once again.

We saw the return of on stage interviews with the "loved ones" now that the posiible evictees are known prior to eviction night, and I for one am happy. I enjoy seeing the family and friends of the HMs on eviction nights, especially when they are reunited, though we didn't see this on Sunday.

After informing Alice she was safe, and Terri and Renee they were nominated, it came time for the decision. Terri was told she was saved first, and then Malibu. It came down to Bianca and Renee.

As predicted last week, Renee did indeed fall from the lofty heights of favourite to win the series, to evictee. Had she not had the argument with Bianca, she would almost certainly still be in the house. Bianca, for her part, ws stunned that she was still there. I can't see her lasting too much longer, but she does have the nomination buffer of the intruders, along with Knobbi who should in all reasonableness be evicted before her.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 5 Recap

Week 5 in the Big Brother house started with a bang as two Housemate Hand Grenades were lobbed into the house.

Nathan made Travis the early bird, meaning Travis had to rise first every morning and make BB breakfast.

At the other end of the day, David's grenade fell on Bianca who became nightwatchman (nightwatchwoman?). She has to take BB a glass of milk and a snack every night, ask him how his day was, and tell him a story if he wants one.

On with the highlights of one dog of a week:

  • Early on Monday morning (Day 29), the HMs were woken by the sound of barking dogs. They were told this week's task involved them each staying in their own dog house for as long as possible.
  • Nobbi didn't even try the task. Party pooper.
  • Rory was disqualified and then he and Nobbi began terrorising the other HMs by spraying the hose on them, among other things.
  • It was an amusing task though, and one that the BBUK house did a few years ago with surprising success.
  • Ultimately, after 11½ hours, Ben quit the task making Alice the winner.
  • Alice then met her reward, a Seeing Eye puppy she had to care for and train. After checking his mouth like any good vet, Alice named him Ollie.
  • Bianca had her first, but by no means loudest, fight of the week when Malibu told Bianca she had a split personality.
  • Ollie became the first dog to push the Diary Room button (This was a caption during the Daily Show. I have to say I do, mostly, like the funny captions the producers add during the shows).
  • Rory poured cordial on the floor and told Terri it was dog pee she had to clean up.
  • Dixie threatened to leave because she was sick of washing.
  • BB called all the HMs to the Diary Room and told them that had BB been imposing fines for breaking HM guidelines, they would have amassed $82,000. They are told the fines would count from now on.
  • We finally got to see the vending machine the HoH has been selecting goodies from each week. Alice declined to choose Malibu's shoes and instead chose Ben's personal photos as well as the obligatory chocolate.
  • Nobbi gave Travis the world's worst haircut. And Travis liked it!! What is wrong with that boy?
  • Ollie became house counsellor.
  • On Day 31, Knobbi got his "K" back by reverting to his nasty ways and telling Travis he has no sex appeal.
  • The hypnotism special aired between the Day 31 and Day 32 Daily Shows but (without being nasty - and oh I am so tempted) that type of television doesn't appeal to me so I didn't bother watching it.
  • On Day 32, Lords of the Manor Knobbi and Rory pontificated about yet another HM: Alice.
  • Ollie is very cute.
  • As punishment for his filthy mouth, Knobbi had to clean all the windows in the backyard. In pouring rain.
  • The kombi sprang multiple leaks, forcing Knobbi to evacuate and finally spend a night inside the house, though not in the bed with the others but on the floor between the doors and the shutter. BB is so evil to Knobbi. It's fantastic because Knobbi deserves every bit of it.
  • Bullying in the BB house reached new heights on Friday when Ben, Knobbi and Rory teamed up to mislead Travis into thinking Alice hated him. Then, to add injury to insult, they later burst in on Travis while he was on the toilet and sprayed him with shower gel. Seeing this bullying go on unpunished is incredibly frustrating, especially given the rumours that it might have been shower cleaner, not shower gel.
  • Some of the "shower gel" got into Travis' eye, and he later left the house during Friday Night Live.
  • On the subject of FNL, the theme for this week was A Day at the Races. After watching a boring race on TV, the HMs played soccer while wearing binoculars the wrong way round. Amusement was had by all.
  • Renee was declared champion after weighing herself down with as many clothes as possible, and she took Dixie to the strategy room.
  • BB updated the HMs on Travis' condition and told them he was being treated at a medical facility.
  • Ben cried with remorse over what he had done to Travis. Sympathy for Ben? Only from those morons Knobbi and Rory. Pathetic weasels all of them.
  • Rory and Alice had a joint birthday party involving another pash-fest in the spa.
  • Alice and Ollie passed their dog task, allowing Ollie to stay on indefinitely.
  • Knobbi set out to prove he really was top dog by pranking Rory by putting pegs on Rory's hair while he was sleeping.

Finally we reached Eviction Show #4. Mike Goldman hosted with Jackie O in place of Kyle who apparently was unwell, though speculation was rife that Kyle's commitments to Idol auditions on the same weekend were really what was keeping him away.

I've heard and read a number of sources saying that Mike Goldman should replace Kyle permanently. I disagree. Kyle may not be everyone's favourite, but his acerbic wit on the eviction shows is just what the show needs to pep it up.

During the eviction show we were introduced to the three intruders entering the house.

Rhianna (25) is a single mum (she has a 6 year old daughter); Cherry (his real name apparently) is a 22 year old student/surfer; while 51 year old Terrence is a loud, brash auctioneer.

On to the eviction voting. The bottom 3 HMs this week were Dixie, Bianca and Alice. Renee saved Alice, and her seat was taken by Knobbi. Oh please let Knobbi be evicted came the cry from The Giggling One and me! Alas, it was not to be. The voting turned out like this:

     DixieBiancaNobbi
    Ben21
    Brigitte12
    Terri12
    Rory21
    Alice 21
    Travis2 1
    Nobbi21
    Renee 24
    Bianca2 1
    Dixie21
    TOTAL14127

Yes, we have another kamikaze. Just like Rebecca two weeks ago, Dixie voted for herself and was evicted. I guess it goes to show how great a place to be the house is this year.

Rhianna, Cherry and Terrence then entered the house. Knobbi, semmingly insecure about his position in charge of the house, called a meeting of his homies Ben and Rory, and reassured them they were still his boys. It never ceases to amuse me how predictable the HM's reactions to intruders are year after year.

The big event of the night was not the entry of the intruders, though. Instead, it was the rowdy heated argument between Bianca, Renee and Alice. Bianca, ever sensitive about her boobs, had a yell-fest with the other two girls - particularly Renee - after they suggested she get a breast reduction.

The argument spilled out from the kombi to the backyard where Bianca and Renee had to be held back from each other.

Ultimately, Renee came away from the argument as the loser. Not only did she pick up a second strike from Big Brother (she had earlier been given a strike (along with Ben, Knobbi and Rory) for discussing nominations) but she has plummeted from favourite to win the series to favourite to be evicted next weekend. Her uncouth behaviour and unwarranted attack on Bianca may well see her leave sooner than anyone thought.

While we're on the subject of evictions, the producers have decided to return to the old ways and give the ultimate power of eviction back to the people. Starting from this week, the HMs will nominate and the public will evict.

One can speculate why they changed the format. Perhaps the public have got over the novelty of the new voting system and just aren't voting in the numbers they were before, thus reducing the money it pulls in. Alternatively, and more cynically, the current system isn't kicking out the housemates the producers wish to leave the house. I'm not sold on the latter view. I think the former is more likely.

But I won't care soon. Only one more day before BBUK starts. Can't wait!

    Big Brother 08 - Week 4 Recap

Week 4 was a time for song and dance. Well, dance mostly. And more petulance from Malibu.

Looking at my notes I find that there are two things that stick out. Both feature Malibu, but are at opposite ends of the spectrum. While for the daily show for Day 21 I've simply noted "Malibu is SO STUPID!!!", my quote of the week also comes from the amusing blonde. On Day 27, having endured a week of disco dance practice with Travis, Malibu spoke about Travis to BB in the Diary Room: "He's like one of those dolls where you pull the string in the back and he just says one of his stupid lines." So true.

Let's reflect on the rest of the notes I made...

  • Dixie and Bianca celebrated Rebecca's departure.
  • In her farewell message Rebecca passed her Head of Household armband to Alice, gave a serve to Dixie and Bianca for being bitchy (PKB1 Alert!), then threw the third Housemate Hand Grenade at Dixie, giving her the job of the Big Brother Mobile Washing Service.
  • On Day 22, BB woke up the HMs to tell them about their So You Think You Can Dance task for the week. The HMs were divided into six partnerships.
  • The wannabe "couple" in the house, Nathan & Renee, were partnered for the waltz; Ben & Bianca were given the tango (setting the scene for Bianca to feel a little frisky); Malibu & Travis were given disco; Terri & David had to learn the German slap dance; Alice & Dixie got to do hip hop; and Rory & Nobbi became a boy band.
  • Much of the dance focus was on Nathan & Renee as they continued to flirt throughout the week. The other HMs thought they made a cute couple. I agree.
  • Wednesday night's show saw a flashback to the early hours of Day 18 when Carson Kressley re-crashed the house to make over the rest of the HMs: Bianca, Dixie, Travis (to whom Carson gave the advice "If you meet girls in church, they're not going to put out"), Nobbi, Rebecca, Nathan, Alice, and David.
  • Carson decided that Renee was the most improved of the HMs he made over so he gave her and Dixie a trip to New York. Dubbo Girls in the City?
  • Back to dance practice, and we found that Travis and rhythm do not go together.
  • In a challenge to get some of her belongings back, Big Brother gave Malibu rose-coloured glasses that she had to wear at all times with a matching attitude.
  • Malibu tried to be positive but she wasn't aided by Rory's antagonism. When BB later gave the HMs the choice of what to return to Malibu, Rory led the charge to give her nothing. In the end, Alice, as HoH, decided to give Malibu some makeup for having a "red hot go".
  • Malibu became even more depressed, especially with Travis' "dancing".
  • Bianca flirted with the boys. She needs some lovin'.
  • Nathan assisted Dixie with the laundry, and as a result Dixie was punished by having to wash the giant bedsheets, while Nathan had to cheer her on.
  • In Scout Night at FNL #4, Alice and Terri made it to the final two. They had to play a Yes/No guessing game to guess the item BB had stolen from the house. The correct answer was "hub-cap", but Alice and Terri were woeful, and despite clues from BB were unable to guess it correctly. In the end Alice won by default after Terri guessed "hoop".
  • Alice therefore became HoH for the second week running. She chose to take Nobbi to the strategy room to give him some time in the house.
  • In the final daily show for the week, Dixie advised Big Brother that she was getting back pain from doing all the washing because her boobs weigh 4.3 kilos each.
  • Big Brother was unsympathetic, and Dixie related this to the other HMS. Unfortunately, she misquoted him a little, and after finding this out, Bianca went a little psycho.
  • The HMs finally performed their dance routines for two of the So You Think You Can Dance judges.
  • After earlier worrying that she had no groove, Dixie did really well in her hip hop routine with Alice.
  • In fact all the HMs did a great job. Malibu was no doubt miffed after Travis got all the praise from the judges after their disco number.
  • After a week without nice food, the HMs were told they passed.

Eviction Show #3 started with the revelation that it was a double eviction. I was therefore expecting more than 3 HMs to be up for eviction, but it wasn't to be. 3 were put up, and only 1 survived.

Before the voting commenced Kyle had a few words to say to Nathan. Apparently he was speaking for many other people when he called Nathan a dog for stringing Renee along. Sometimes I like it when Kyle speaks his mind, but that was inappropriate and uncalled for. Kyle, you are a dog. And a mangy, filthy, flee-ridden one at that.

With Terri in curlers, Dixie in her nurse uniform, and Travis with a drawn on lipstick smile (he apparently edged out Malibu as the dumbest housemate and his award was to be made up by her) the HMs didn't appear to be taking things too seriously. Things changed somewhat when they were advised it was a double eviction.

The bottom 3 housmates this week were David, Nathan and Alice. Alice chose to save herself, and she was replace by perennial nominee Rory.

    Voting went like this:

     NathanRoryDavid
    Dixie21
    Travis1 2
    Brigitte21
    Ben1 2
    Terri2 1
    Bianca1 2
    Nobbi2 1
    Renee 21
    Alice4 2
    David12
    Nathan 12
    Rory2 1
    TOTAL18714

Evictee number one for the night was Nathan who was hounded mercilessly on stage by both Kyle and Jackie. It brought back the days of Gretel's post-eviction interviews with her least favourite male housemates - particularly Jamie last year.

Now I like going the snark. I do say some potentially nasty things about HMs when I blog, but I don't do it particularly nastily, and not on stage in front of the whole country. Kyle went back to his weasily ways, and I thought Nathan acquitted himself very well, easily coming across as the better man.

David was then evicted, reducing the number of male HMs to 4 (with 6 women). The rumour mill (aka Behind Big Brother) is pointing to intruders entering the house in the not too distant future.

There's also a hypnotism special later this week (filmed earlier last week) where HMs get to act like prats. I have my own views on hypnotism, in that it's not the voodoo it's portrayed to be, so I'm not looking forward to the show. You have to be a willing participant to be hypnotised in the first place, and in a house full of extroverts, there is plenty of willingness to act like a complete tool. Heck, they don't need some tacky TV personality to tell them they're getting sleepy in order to look like fools. Locking them in a house for weeks on end is more than sufficient.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 3 Recap

It's the end of Week 3 and Knobbi is still in the kombi. I'm actually quite impressed that BB has kept it up so long. Usually these things last for a day or two, but Knobbi's punishment continues unabated. The guy has quit his whining for the most part so, for now, he becomes "Nobbi" again.

And what juicy highlights came to our attention up the vacuum thingy this week?

  • Saxon's farewell message was played and he delivered the 2nd Housemate Hand Grenade. He chose Malibu to lose all of her possessions indefinitely.
  • Malibu: "What does indefinitely mean?"
  • Malibu did not take it well. At all. She vented her anger by whacking the TV monitor with her shoe and telling everyone she wanted to leave the house so she could bash Saxon. Gold.
  • Rory, David, Alice and Renee were chosen to travel on Big Brother Airlines and went into the "plane" for a few hours before arriving, to their delight, in "Bali" (aka that yard with the trees and pool on the other side of the wall).

I'll just say here, kudos to BB for this one. Taking HMs already locked in a house and then locking them in a tiny plane for hours was genius. Perfect for the type of conversations we like to watch on Big Mouth. Now back to Malibu...

  • ...who threatened to go on a hunger strike.
  • BB revealed the weekly task - standing in the back yard catching cricket balls in the Big Brother Test Match. This one was a nice idea, but unfortunately the housemates' enthusiasm for this task was lower than Lowy McLow set a world record in the limbo.
  • Malibu went through with her threat and did go on a hunger strike.
  • Not wanting to talk to BB, Malibu took Dixie in to the Diary Room to act as a go-between. This resulted in one of the funniest scenes ever to come out of the Big Brother house. Here's an exerpt:

Malibu and Dixie are in the Diary Room chair.
Malibu: Tell him I don't feel comfortable wearing other people's clothes, so could I have some pillow cases with holes and a head hole cut in it.
BB: Dixie, could you please tell Brigitte that Big Brother will get back to her.
Dixie: Brigitte, Big Brother said that he'll get back to you.
    Malibu: Hmph!
    Dixie: Brigitte said "hmph!"
BB: Thank you Dixie. And Dixie, could you tell Brigitte Big Brother said "Thank you Brigitte."
Dixie: Big Brother said "Up yours."

    Dixie rocks!

  • BB gave Brigitte a pink pillow case which she made into a dress.
  • Corey showed his maturity by throwing flour on the sleeping Malibu. He must fancy her.
  • Malibu retaliated by squirting sauce in Corey's bed.
  • Malibu stated that 40% of Americans are called Erik.
  • Carson Kressley crashed the BB house and dressed Terri, Malibu, Ben, Corey, Renee and Rory. I can't wait for him to come back next week and dress the gayest "not gay" person in history, Travis.
  • Dixie decided to get fit.
  • Malibu and Dixie visited the Diary Room again:

Malibu and Dixie are leaving the Diary Room.
Malibu: I'm going to Big Brother's house and stealing his stuff.
Dixie: You are in his house.
Malibu: Well then I'm stealing his stuff.
Malibu grabs the large pot plant sitting outside the Diary Room and drags it with her.

  • David finally decided it was time to play the "I escaped from the Exclusive Brethren" card.
  • Renee admitted fancying Nathan and it became a house talking point.
  • Rebecca turned 23.
  • Corey finally left the house!!!!!!!
  • Corey finally left the house!!!!!!! (I just had to say that again!)
  • Corey and Nobbi won $60,000 for the winner's prize money by matching answers in BB's "Which HM is the most..." quiz.
  • In FNL #3, Big Brother rigged the final spelling Bee round so that Rebecca would win. She became HoH.
  • Rebecca chose to take Malibu to the strategy room. Bwahahahahahaha! Who would have thought "Malibu" and "strategy room" would ever go together?
  • Ben on Malibu: "I may have an annoying personality, but at least I have one."
  • Finally we saw some snogging action when Alice pashed Ben druing a truth or dare session in the spa.
  • Travis does nothing to dispel gay rumours when he recoils at the dare of kissing Dixie.

And lastly, before we get to the Eviction Show, it's time for the Big Brother word of the week. BB often introduces words that aren't part of normal every day vocab, but become commonly used inside the confines of the Big Brother compound.

And that word is "cut". As in, "I'm not cut" (I'm not angry) or "I didn't want to cut her up" (I didn't want to make her angry). There's been a fair amount of cutness between the women in the house, that's for sure.

The producers dragged Travis' mum on stage to defend him during Eviction Show #2. She wasn't particularly convincing.

The bottom 3 HMs were Ben, Rory and Travis. Returning the favour from last week, Rebecca saved Travis only to be nominated herself as the 4th least popular housemate.

Here's how the voting went down:

     BenRebeccaRory
    David21
    Brigitte2 1
    Terri21
    Nobbi12
    Bianca12
    Alice 21
    Dixie12
    Nathan12
    Renee12
    Travis1 2
    Ben 21
    Rory12
    Rebecca24
    TOTAL15225

Yeah, you read that right. Rebecca the stupid bimbo voted for herself. It wouldn't have made a difference even if she hadn't but good riddance I say.

Interestingly, the whole "Revolve" thing was given the heave ho after the backlash against it last week. Instead, Kyle and Jackie O just read out the name of one of the non-evicted housemates and then announced the evictee.

And just to prove exactly how live the Eviction Show really is, Rebecca appeared on stage immediately upon the doors of the house shutting behind her. Whatever will they think of next to piss us off?

    Big Brother 08 - Week 2 Recap

What with weddings and a conference we've been behind Big Brother-wise here up the vacuum thingy, but having now caught up, it's time to dissect week 2.

  • Corey the brat surfaced when he was told he must share a locker with Terri.
  • Terri had to look after Corey but he hid and the other housemates told her he escaped.
  • Big Brother made a mess in the garden.
  • Dixie snored.
  • Bianca's dislike for Corey began to show. Her fellow HMs told her to chill.
  • Asked why she was spending so much time putting on make-up, Malibu replied it was because she was on TV.
  • Corey chose chocolate and soft drink over a hair straightener.
  • Bianca confronted Corey over her dislike for him, and for some unfathomable reason tried to enter into a rational debate with the thickhead.
  • Big Brother made more mess in the garden.
  • Malibu declared she thought Barney was hideous because he wouldn't stop smiling.
  • Saxon revealed his anti-culinary skills when he demonstrated he didn't know how to make porridge. That's no how ye make porridge.
  • Big Brother gave Corey the opportunity to kick out two "web mates". He refused.
  • Big Brother then gave the eviction power to Corey's minder, Terri.
  • The HMs were told Terri would kick two web mates out at sunrise. Knobbi (still in the kombi) found another reason to hate Terri.
  • Pretending to be a ninja, Rory was put in his place by Big Brother who informed Rory he wasn't qualified. I like the new, funny Big Brother.
  • At dawn on Day 10, Terri chose to evict Michael and Barney. Sheesh! I had Barney in the sweep you dozy cow!
  • Terri was made a fully fledged housemate again.
  • Rebecca told BB she wanted to leave, and had a cry.
  • Dixie also had a cry after she was accused of stealing food.
  • Dixie stated she was sick of living with "a bunch of wankers" and wanted to go home.
  • Corey surprises everone by actually being entertaining with a pretty decent Mr Bean impression.
  • Big Brother made yet more mess in the garden, complemented with raining confetti.
  • Rebecca and Dixie agree to be soldiers and not go home.
  • Nathan was voted as Mr Big Brother 2008.
  • During FNL #2, BB revealed the prize for winning was to become Head of House (an idea "borrowed" from BB USA) with extra voting powers on eviction night.
  • After being dragged around a course by Rory during FNL, asked by BB if she was OK, an exhausted Terri answered "I haven't decided yet."
  • Nathan was victorious and became HoH.
  • Ineligible to vote in the upcoming evicition, Nathan's reward of entry to the Strategy Room (and what a fizzer that has been) and extra voting powers were promptly taken from him and handed to FNL runner-up Travis.
  • Knobbi became mother for a day to celebrate Mother's Day.
  • The HMs were informed they passed the Cleaning Task and won food.
  • Saxon got irritated no one was taking his alien conspiracy theories seriously. Awwww.
  • Bianca took on Corey in another verbal stoush and soundly trounced his puny white arse. Corey was, of course, to stupid to realise this.

    Phew. Deep breath.

And so to Eviction Show #1, where Big Brother revealed that the bottom 3 housemates, as voted by the public, were David, Rebecca and Saxon.

Rebecca was saved by her pal Travis, and the housemate with the 4th least amount of votes, Rory, slotted into her place. What that meant was the tradition of a woman being evicted first would be broken with three blokes up for the chop. And I couldn't be more pleased.

The HMs then voted on who to evict. The voting went like this:

     SaxonDavidRory
    Renee21
    Bianca21
    Ben12
    Alice2 1
    Nobbi 21
    Brigitte2 1
    Dixie21
    Rebecca2 1
    Travis 42
    Saxon 21
    David2 1
    Rory12
    TOTAL16158

So UFO Boy was sent to the stars. His mode of departure was "The Revolve" - a giant turn table divided into three sections - one for each nominated housemate.

The idea was that the device would turn, and the doors would open revealing the saved housmates. Unfortunately, any suspense was totally lost when Big Brother announced "David" and Rory walked back in, thereby telling us immediately which housemate was evicted.

"The Revolve" was a momumental flop. I can see how it sounded like a good idea in a brain storming session during pre-production, but the execution was comically anticlimactic.

Both I and The Giggling One are enjoying this season more than last year. That view is not least due to the new found sense of humour being injected into the show. I can't see why so many people are criticizing it. It is sooo much better than last year. I just hope it continues to grow.

    Big Brother 08 - Week 1 Recap

One week down and so many highlights. Hmmm, it's hard to infuse that sentence with the oodles of sarcasm it was meant with.

    Let's see:

  • Malibu and Rebecca discussed implants. Who woulda thought?
  • Terri was voted out on the morning of Day 2 to no one's surprise after the boys ganged up on her.
  • Terri had her revenge and kicked Nobbi out to the kombi van.
  • Nobbi didn't take it well.
  • Dixie missed her mum and had a cry. On Day 2!!!!
  • The boys (minus Travis) formed the Spa Mafia.
  • Saxon revealed he's really an arsehole.
  • The Spa Mafia activated Operation Sparkles and kidnapped Malibu's toy unicorn that she can't sleep without.
  • Dixie cried again.
  • In Friday Night Live, Rima broke her leg and was taken to hospital; Saxon and Alice were disqualified when their space ship prop broke through no fault of their own; Nobbi won the night and was awarded $20,000...in Zimbabwean Dollars.
  • David turned 33 and had a party.
  • A hidden kitchen was revealed, and the housemates gained access after answering 9 out of 12 questions about thmselves and the house correctly (they needed 7).
  • Bianca got upset when other HMs stole her bread.
  • Sparkles was found! Dixie was framed. The Spa Mafia remained successfully unsuspected. Maybe now the Sparkles saga is over we'll get to see some more stimulating action from the house.

Nobbi is still banished from the house proper, and is still seething over Terri's housemate hand grenade. Nobbi's attitude has in fact, led me to start referring to him as Knobbi. He's missed a golden opportunity to ingratiate himself with viewers. Having his own story line in the house so early is a potential goldmine, allowing him to make use of the precious air time.

Unfortunately Knobbi has far from shined, and he is certainly more unpopular than he could or should be (or at least I thought so until I saw Big Mouth - more on that next week). Compare his situation with Bianca for example. I had a hard time trying to remember her name until the garlic bread incident. And can I just say, had people been stealing my bread I'd have been annoyed too.

So now we get to Sunday night's (Day 8) offering: The Gatecrashers.

Has Big Brother ever been so overhyped and underdelivered? If not, this one gets very, very close.

Firstly we saw Jackie O still has trouble dressing, though her dress led to speculation from some sources that she might be pregnant. Kyle's tic was less noticeable, and I must say I am enjoying his irreverence.

Last week's Launch Show microphones had obviously been put through the wash a couple of times and were now significantly smaller.

Rima sent the HMs her regards from hospital, almost dwarfed by the Coke can she held.

We were also treated to highlights from the week which included footage like food crashing off the end of the conveyor belt. Why wasn't this stuff in the Daily Show? The highlights were much more exciting than stupid Princess Sparkles.

On to the new housemates, or "Web Mates" as they were dubbed. These were the three most voted for people on the internet.

First up was Barney, a part time life guard. The girls were rather impressed when he entered the house.

The reactions of the girls were significantly more muted for the entrances of Nathan and Michael. Interestingly, despite being the most popular of the "Web Mates" in the voting stakes, Michael was the only one not interviewed on stage. It seems the law has been laid down to the producers about running overtime and his on stage interview was cut to save time.

Then came the highlight, or more accurately the lowlight, of the night. After all the hype, party boy Corey Worthington was brought on to the stage and then sent into the house as a house guest. Expecting a smart arse, arrogant, self-absorbed bad boy, what we got instead was a bland, inarticulate 17 year old, who by all rights should have faded into obscurity 10 minutes after the house trashing fiasco died down.

This guy would never have made it past the first stage of Big Brother auditions. He must have one hell of a PR machine.

So, rather inevitably, Corey's entrance to the house (bizarrely sans trademark sunglasses) was more of a fizzer than when Fizzy McFizz drank a fizzy drink and found out it was flat.

The highlight of the evening was easily the return of Nanna Terri. Ostensibly sent back in as a house guest to chaperone bad boy Corey, Terri's main role, however, is to stir things up after Channel 10 spent all that time promoting her. And stir things up she did. Knobbi was far from delighted to see her and made such a show of it that the other HMs felt compelled to give him hugs. Sheesh. Grow up you tosser.

At the conclusion of the show, the new voting system was unveiled. Instead of HMs nominating, and the public voting to evict, it's now the other way around. The public vote for their favourite housemate Idol-style, with the housemates then deciding which of the three least popular HMs is evicted.

It's a big departure from the normal voting mechanics, and I'm not sure I like it. It was tried as a one-off last year, but even then the public were nominating who they wanted to put up for eviction, not who they wanted to save (on that occasion the public voted to nominate Daniela, Billy, Zach and Travis, with Daniela begin booted unanimously by the other HMs).

I could speculate why the producers have decided to do things this way. It's certainly a boon for HMs like Knobbi who are popular inside the house but hated on the outside. Giving housemates the ultimate decision to boot someone is also hazardous ratings wise if the public's favourites are evicted.

But then again, if they try enough new things maybe they'll eventually find something that will actually live up to the hype.
